NURSERY & PRE-PREP

The children settle very quickly within our vibrant and supportive atmosphere, where happiness is the key to our success from this early age. Every child is treated as a valued and unique individual and the strong partnership with parents and the caring environment they foster within each classroom, provides children with a firm foundation and a secure start to their education. Within the small classes, the enthusiastic and highly qualified staff ensure that the children develop a positive and confident attitude to learning.
THE LOWER SCHOOL
Situated in the modern Collings building at Holmewood, our purpose-built classrooms are light and spacious – perfect for our young learners.Form teachers in Years 3 and 4 continue to teach the majority of subjects but take advantage of specialist teachers for Games, PE, art, music, drama and French. Year 5 progress to all the lessons being taught by subject-specialist teachers. The curriculum is always evolving ensuring it is engaging and fun for our learners. The children’s input towards the direction of their lessons is clearly evident as they discuss their finished writing, creation or activity. Every child is both supported and challenged to work towards their own personal targets in lessons and we find lots of ways to celebrate achievements.
THE UPPER SCHOOL
The Upper School (Years 6, 7 and 8) at Holmewood represents the final stepping-stone of your child’s journey through Holmewood. One that sees the children continue to develop into confident, happy, interesting and interested individuals. Secure and confident children who will benefit from the educational landscape at their various senior schools. They take a great deal of pride in our Upper School community and enjoy sharing in each other’s many and varied successes. We encourage greater independence and aim to ensure that all members of our school feel they are valued and respected. By using subject specialist teachers throughout the curriculum, we fire the children’s imagination and inspire them to be creative, adventurous and committed in their learning.
ACTIVITIES
There is much more to a great education than goes on in the classroom. Holmewood not only recognises this view but embraces it wholeheartedly and offers an extensive and varied activities programme for girls and boys throughout the school as an integral part of the school day and a child’s wider education. The children select their own activities each term from an extensive list which changes according to the season, the skills and interests of the staff and requests from the children themselves. Everyone in the prep school has two activity sessions a week and the children are always encouraged to try something new and often this can become their latest ‘best ever’. Traditional favourites are regularly refreshed and renewed by the staff and there is always something for everyone. Holmewood makes full use of its own extensive and beautiful grounds but also takes children off-site for specialist activities.
SPORT
Holmewood House’s sport programme is unashamedly child centred. Each of the children, regardless of their abilities, are encouraged to enjoy their games sessions. The aim to achieve a 100% participation rate allows every child to experience the benefits of match days and controlled competition on a weekly basis.A team of skilled, highly experienced, enthusiastic sports staff are on hand from Nursery to Year 8 to help support and develop their knowledge and skills and instil a love and passion for a variety of sports.Sporting experiences at Holmewood House take many forms from national success in Squash, Swimming or Gymnastics to encouraging the pre-prep children to understand the advantages and the value of play.

At Holmewood House, they want to recognise pupils who evidence outstanding ability across the curriculum and offer scholarships to those showing excellence in a range of areas. Pupils for whom Holmewood House would be inaccessible without financial assistance may also apply for a bursary to cover school fees if they are successful in their scholarship application.
