The ‘Can Do’ culture of the school is positive and progressive and our established shared mission statement, Believe Achieve Succeed, is embraced by all. At Newcomen Primary School we are passionate about enthusing our children with a love of learning which is both meaningful and relevant. The curriculum is designed to allow our children to develop all important human qualities and dispositions. While knowledge is integral to the design of our curriculum, the key driver is the ethos and values of our school. They have a holistic approach where pupils can access a knowledge rich, vocabulary focused curriculum which builds skills and reinforces learning.
Early Years
As an early years team, we feel privileged to be part of the first steps in developing a love of life-long learning in our children’s education at Newcomen Primary School. Through stimulating, engaging and language rich environments, children have the opportunity to become independent and resilient learners. As a school, we base our teaching on Rosenshine’s principles of instruction. Even from our youngest children, learning is most effective with repetition. At Newcomen Primary School, Early Years begins with Nursery which includes 3 and 4 year- olds and 4 and 5 year- olds in Reception. Children can attend our Nursery on a 15 hour place. The children attend either a morning or an afternoon place. The nursery sessions are 3 hours and the children attend 5 sessions a week.
Curriculum
At Newcomen Primary School they are passionate about enthusing our children with a love of learning which is both meaningful and relevant. The curriculum is designed to allow the children to develop all important human qualities and dispositions. They offer children an exemplary education in a safe, calm and purposeful environment. The aim is to nurture well-rounded, respectful and resilient children who will develop skills for life-long learning. They openly encourage all the children to be respectful of themselves and of others in the school, the local community and the wider world. They champion a knowledge-based curriculum which is broad and balanced, and which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children. They endeavour to equip pupils to have the requisite knowledge, skills and wider understanding to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education. Within this curriculum the children will develop their learning of key facts, important events and will develop their understanding of the world around them. This is underpinned by evidence informed practice.
Clubs and Activities
As well as encouraging our pupils to strive to achieve their best within the classroom, they also offer a hugely impressive range of extra – curricular activities. Most clubs take place immediately after school, starting at 3.05pm and finishing at 4.00pm. They aim to provide our children with the very best opportunities during their time at Newcomen. Most after school clubs are run by school staff and therefore have no cost. Thank you to all staff, who generously give of their time to enhance provision for our children. Some clubs are delivered by external providers and therefore incur a small cost. Please see outdoor noticeboard outside the Hudson Wing and website link for up to date timetables.
SEND
Newcomen Primary School is larger than average primary school and is oversubscribed. The proportion of pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is higher than national average. At Newcomen, pupils are continuing to achieve significantly higher standards than others nationally and well exceed the government’s current floor standards. “There is very little difference in the progress of disadvantaged pupils, most–able pupils, pupils who have special education needs and/or disabilities, and boys and girls.”
