The school, within the Diocese of Leeds and set in the beautiful town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, was established over fifty years ago through the amalgamation of Christ Church Secondary School for Boys and St. Peter’s Secondary School for Girls, with just 650 pupils on roll but since that time it has developed in prestige and size and now caters for nearly 2000 students.The success of St. Aidan’s is based on the excellent relationships that are evident between the school, the students, and their parents or carers enabling it to provide the very best in educational opportunities to meet the needs of the students as they move either into Higher Education or employment, as well as contributing to the qualities that allow them to make significant contributions to society upon leaving school.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) all students follow separate courses in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Geography, History, ICT, Modern Languages, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies and Technology.Science is taught as an integrated course in Years 7 and 8, and then as separate subjects – Biology, Chemistry and Physics – from Year 9. All students begin French in Year 7, before taking up either French or Spanish in Year 8 and 9. A small number of pupils follow a dual language pathway with French and German or French and Spanish.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) students work towards a maximum of 11 subjects at GCSE. Most students take full GCSEs in English and English Literature; Mathematics; Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Co-ordinated Science); a Modern Language and Religious Studies.They then choose three further GCSEs from Fine Art, Art Graphics, Business Studies, Computer Science, Dance, Drama, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, ICT, Media Studies, a second Modern Language, Music, Physical Education and a range of Technology Options (Food, Textiles or Product Design).
Sixth Form
The Associated Sixth Form provides a Christian-based environment in which all students who wish to remain at school beyond the age of 16 are given the opportunity to fulfil their potential. By pooling the resources, expertise and experience of two outstanding schools, we provide an excellent all-round education which allows students to pursue their individual aspirations within a community with shared goals and Christian values. EXTENDED CURRICULUM
At St. Aidan’s they believe strongly that the school should make opportunities for students to achieve outside the classroom and to share interests and enthusiasms with fellow students. We use the term ‘extended curriculum’ to describe the vast range of clubs, activities and trips on offer beyond the formal curriculum.
