The Nelson Thomlinson School is a State Secondary School for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)
Nothing that happens at NTS does so by accident. The impeccable behaviour of the pupils (Ofsted’s phrasing, not mine), their politeness and good manners, their achievement (academic and extra-curricular) are all down to sheer hard work — theirs and ours. The standards they have fought hard to maintain have been established over many years through the commitment of a dedicated team of professionals. The eager children have a real thirst for learning and the excellent staff team are committed and dedicated in ensuring that each and every child achieves. They have high standards and expect the best.
Keystage 3
When pupils join the school they are placed in a Form or Tutor Group, which will stay together for the next five years of secondary education. This group of about 28 pupils will place them with their friends from primary school, and their Tutor will ensure not only their settling successfully into the school but also that their academic progress is going well. There is a deliberate design to the groupings in Year 7, and this becomes more formal in Years 8 and 9. Setting in Mathematics and Computing continues with Science joining this arrangement and introduced for English, French, Geography, History and RE. There is some flexibility here to allow some of the subjects to set independently of the full ‘curriculum block’. Setting allows groups to follow the right work at the right pace. The number of groups in each year also gives us the flexibility to match the curriculum’s demands with each pupil’s strengths and needs. Some pupils are given the chance to study Spanish as an additional language. However, as a response to the pandemic most classes, except in Mathematics, Computing and Science are currently mixed ability.
Keystage 4
All pupils take English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. In Science, all pupils begin studying Double Award, with some stepping up to the Triple Award of separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects in Year 11. These give students a breadth of experiences in addition to their GCSE courses. PE and PSHRE are compulsory for all pupils. PSHRE includes PSHE (including SRE), RE, Citizenship and Careers education. All pupils have a timetable which includes core subjects and their option choices.
Clubs & Activities
If you are going to make the most out of your time at The Nelson Thomlinson School you would be strongly advised to get involved in activities outside your normal lessons. You will meet new friends, will see your teachers in a different light and will pick up valuable “soft” skills and experiences which will benefit you in later life. You might also pick up some valuable House Points along the way. At NTS there a wide range of lunchtime and after school clubs and activities which you can get involved in. There are a huge range of sporting activities run at the school (see below). Whether you are a newcomer to the sport or a proven sports star there is a place for you. Whether it is for fun and fitness or in competitive fixtures you will be encouraged and supported by all of the sports staff, who spend hours going above and beyond the call of duty.
Learning Support for pupils with Special Needs
They have a clear policy here: all pupils are to be helped to be successful in their learning. They are no less ambitious for pupils with special needs in education, and if the difficulties lie with reading, or numeracy, or spelling, or handwriting, then we seek to put them right. We are justly proud of the success of our interventions (such as the Paired Reading scheme) and the gains in that children make.
